Description of Services

The Engineering Division includes all engineering programs and provides support to the following:

  • Board of Appeals
  • Board of Department
  • Board of Health
  • Board of Selectmen
  • Conservation Commission
  • Council on Aging
  • Department of Public Works
  • Development review Committee
  • Fire and Police Departments
  • LexHAB
  • Permanent Building Committee
  • Planning Board
  • Public Building Maintenance
  • School Administration
  • Traffic Mitigation Group
  • Traffic Safety Committee
  • Transportation Advisory Committee
  • Other Town Committees

Engineering Division responsibilities include:

  • Administering the Capital Budget for the Town's infrastructure and buildings with the exception of the School Department buildings.
  • Prepare and review plans, specifications, and bids for related building and Public Works construction projects.
  • Active in seeking grants.
  • Oversees, inspects, and keeps record for water/sewer installation and drain construction.
  • Issues appropriate permits.
  • Inspects all subdivision construction for conformance to Town standards.
  • Maintains public records concerning street lines, grades, land and lotting.

Service Policy

Maps:
All map reproductions and/or plan research may be ordered by completing a "Service Request" form.  All requests must be in writing.  All requests are filled in the order they are received and usually completed by 10:00 a.m. the next business day.  No telephone orders please.

Permits:
The Engineering Division issues the following permits:

  • Sewer Connection Permits
  • Water Connection Permits
  • Right of Way Permits, and Driveway Permits

All Applications for permits will be accepted in the Engineering Office at the Public Facilities Building, 201 Bedford Street, Room 202, from 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with a turn around time of approximately 48 hours.  Applications can also be faxed to the Engineering Office at (781) 781-274-8392.  Permits for work in town streets will be issued seasonally from April 22nd - November 14th and must be picked up at the Engineering Office.

Traffic Safety:
Respond to residents' traffic safety concerns, which include traffic signage and crosswalks. A new procedure was initiated to collaborative effort between DPW and the Police Department.

Under this new procedure, all traffic safety requests are to be first submitted to the Police Department to evaluate any safety issues.  A Traffic Safety Request Form (PDF) or Traffic Safety Request Form (Doc) can be submitted electronically to Lieutenant Manuel Ferro: mferro@lexingtonma.gov or by mail attention to: Lt. Ferro, Lexington Police Department, 1575 Mass Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420.
